The area under the chin is called double chin. With increasing age and the gravity effect , the subcutaneous muscle and fat tissues in the area called double chin start to sag down as other tissues do. The double chin is the first place where fats gather in case of weight gain. Some patients may have very fatty double chin even though they are not fat. This causes the patient to look fatter, older and more tired than he/he is actually. But the biggest factor that causes sagging is the aging. Preparation for Operation
You should stop taking aspirin and its derivatives one week before the operation. (Do not stop taking the medication you permanently use without consulting your doctor).
It is recommended not to smoke for a while before and after the operation.
Do not put on any makeup, do not use hair gel, wear comfortable clothes and leave your jewels at home before coming to the hospital for operation.
Do not eat or drink anything 6 hours before the operation.
Be present at the hospital about two hours before the operation.
When you come to the room reserved for you, you may be given an oral drug if you want, it will relax you.
Operation Technique
1- In the cases that the sagging under the chin results from overweight, extra fat is removed only through liposuction method, so the fats causing double chin are gone. It gives good results when applied for those who are not old and not so fat.
2- If the sagging results from both the muscles and extra fat, fats need to be removed and the muscles need to be shortened. With an incision of 2-3 cm under chin, extra fats in this area are removed and loose muscles are shortened up to the middle line and repaired. In the same session, if the chin tip is small, small prosthesis is put in the tip of the chin and the facial aesthetics is corrected.
3- If the sagging results from muscles, fats and skin, extra skin should be removed. As in facelift operations, the incision starts in front of the ears and is extended to the hairy skin at the back of ears and lifted down to the area of neck skin under chin. The lifted skin is stretched to ear sides.
Type of Anesthesia
General or local anesthesia can be applied.
Duration of Operation
Duration of operation is about 1 hour.
Recovery Period
You can leave the hospital on the same day or stay in hospital for 1 night.
A special bandage passing under chin is applied.
You can get back into your usual routine within 2-8 days depending on the operation.
